Album Notes
Doobie Brothers: Patrick Simmons, Tom Johnston (vocals, guitar); Tiran Porter (vocals, bass); Keith Knudsen (vocals, drums); Jeff "Skunk" Baxter (guitar); John Hartman (drums).Additional personnel: Maria Muldaur (vocals); Ry Cooder (guitar); Conte Condoli, Pete Condoli (trumpet); Billy Payne (keyboards); Victor Feldman (marimba, percussion); Carl Himmle (drums, percussion); Bobbye Hall Porter (congas); Shirlie Matthews, Venetta Fields, Jessica Smith (background vocals).Recorded at Warner Bros. Recording Studios, North Hollywood, California. With a former Steely Dan guitar wiz now a full time member of the band, the Doobie Brothers decided to branch out from their trademark West Coast pop/rock. This is a far more ambitious album than its predecessors. The album's centerpiece (and at over six minutes, the longest track) is "I Cheat the Hangman," which begins as a folkish harmony piece a la David Crosby's "Guinevere," and then goes off on an extended instrumental break. Other high points include a satisfying cover of Kim Weston's Motown classic "Take Me in Your Arms," the bluesy country of "Texas Lullabye," and "Star Key Sequel Rag," a lovely acoustic guitar instrumental with something of a Renaissance feel.

2014 was truly a successful year for the classic rock legends The Doobie Brothers. After recording the past four decades with a plethora of high charting rock masterpieces, they returned to the studio for the first time in years with original founders Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons, along with latter day superstar alumni Michael McDonald and John McFee and delivered the amazing country rock infused "Southbound."

As a Southern tribute to their American roots, a handful of today's country and pop superstars such as Zac Brown Band, Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley, Toby Keith, Huey Lewis and Sara Evans joined The Doobie Brothers for incredible revisits of their biggest hit songs. This session revitalized another stunning chapter for the Doobie franchise as the album became a sensation, proving itself a homerun in both the pop (No. 16) and country charts (No. 7) upon its release.

More duets energize the album like the hard drivin' sound of "Long Train Runnin' " with Toby Keith and Huey Lewis along for the ride, as well as Brad Paisley joining in the fun on "Rockin' Down The Highway" and The Voice's Blake Shelton nailing down an impeccable duet with the band on "Listen To The Music."

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS TAKIN' IT TO THE STREETS 180 GRAM OUT OF PRINT IMPORT LP

Out Of Print! Only a few copies available!

180 Gram Vinyl! A New Direction for These California Pop Rockers - Polished, Soulful, Funky! Includes "Rio" & "It Keeps You Runnin'"!

The Doobie Brothers are an American rock band. The band has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide throughout its career. The group was inducted into The Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004. Takin' It to the Streets, debuted a radical change in their sound. Their electric-guitar-based rock and roll gave way to a more soft rock and blue-eyed soul sound, emphasizing keyboards and horns and subtler, more syncopated rhythms. Baxter contributed jazz-inflected guitar stylings reminiscent of Steely Dan (as he had played with that group), along with more emphasis on compound chords and unusual, complex chords and sophisticated progressions with key changes and longer, more developed melody lines. Above all, McDonald's voice became the band's new signature sound. Takin' It to the Streets featured McDonald's title track and "It Keeps You Runnin'," both hits.

This new direction for these California Pop rockers' sound was more polished, more soulful, funkier and with a varied set of catchy songs, Takin' It To The Streets (1976) meant a new and successful start for the already established Boogie Rock band. Regarded by many as their most creative period, the late seventies resulted in some great sounding, well balanced and interesting albums of which Takin' It To The Streets was arguably one of the best. Highlights of the album are modern Pop classic "Takin' It To The Streets", the funky "Rio" and the energetic Soul rocker "Turn It Loose".

"The group's first album with Michael McDonald marked a shift to a more mellow and self-consciously soulful sound for the Doobies, not all that different from what happened to Steely Dan -- whence McDonald (and Jeff Baxter) had come -- between, say, Can't Buy a Thrill and Pretzel Logic. They showed an ability to expand on the lyricism of Patrick Simmons and Baxter's writing on 'Wheels of Fortune,' while the title track introduced McDonald's white funk sound cold to their output, successfully... Tiran Porter's hauntingly beautiful 'For Someone Special' was a pure soul classic right in the midst of all of these higher-energy pieces." - Bruce Eder, allmusic

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS LIVE AT WOLF TRAP 180 GRAM LIMITED EDITION 2LP

180 Gram Vinyl! Live Album From 2004 Performance On Double LP!

The third live album by The Doobie Brothers contains performances from their July 25, 2004 concert at Wolf Trap National Park in Virginia. Originally released in the fall of 2004, the album revived a handful of tracks the Doobies had not previously released live versions of from Tom Johnston's original stint with the band. The set also includes a cover of the rock and roll standard "Little Bitty Pretty One". The album also contains the final recordings of drummer and vocalist Keith Knudsen who died shortly after its release.

"Living once again in the carefree boogie days that are Michael McDonald-less, the Doobie Brothers are doing just fine touring the world and playing the tunes that have everyone lightly grooving. Live at Wolf Trap captures a July 2004 show, but it's really just the soundtrack to a DVD that's much longer... An especially bright horn section complements this edition of the Doobies well, since a bit of early Chicago suits them now more than ever. Be it overdubbing or not, the harmonies and powerful exuberance of the Doobies' voices are still spectacular, and Wolf Trap's crystal-clear recording does a mind-blowing job of capturing them. The emotion pulled out of "Another Park, Another Sunday" shows this band still puts genuine heart into its playing... While they've slipped a little too comfortably into their B-list role -- and putting lesser new songs next to the classics just points it out -- Wolf Trap is still 80 percent feel-good boogie music played by musicians who remember why they were so beloved, 100 percent." - allmusic

With his husky, soulful baritone, Michael McDonald became one of the most distinctive and popular vocalists to emerge from the laid-back California pop/rock scene of the late '70s. McDonald found the middle ground between blue-eyed soul and smooth soft rock, a sound that made him a star. He initially essayed his signature style with the Doobie Brothers, ushering in the group's most popular period with hits like "What a Fool Believes" and "Taking It to the Streets." McDonald disbanded the group in 1982 to pursue a solo career, which was initially quite successful, but by the end of the decade his popularity had faded away, since he was reluctant to work regularly and hesitant to update his sound to suit shifting popular tastes.

After singing backup on several Steely Dan albums in the mid-'70s, Michael McDonald joined the Doobie Brothers in 1977. He was largely responsible for moving the group away from boogie rock and toward polished, jazzy blue-eyed soul. Prior to the Doobies' farewell tour in 1982, he sang harmony on several hit singles, including tracks by Donna Summer, Toto, Kenny Loggins, and Christopher Cross. As it turned out, McDonald's solo work was a cross between the Doobie Brothers' white-bread soul and Cross' adult contemporary ballads.

McDonald released his solo debut, If That's What It Takes, in 1982. The record climbed to number six on the strength of the number four single "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)," which also crossed over into the R&B Top Ten. In 1983, he had another Top 20 pop hit (and a Top Ten R&B hit) with his duet with James Ingram, "Yah Mo B There." McDonald didn't deliver his second solo album, No Lookin' Back, until 1985. The record wasn't as successful as its predecessor, producing only one moderate hit in its title track. He bounced back the following year, when his duet with Patti LaBelle, "On My Own," shot to number one and "Sweet Freedom," his theme for the Billy Crystal/Gregory Hines comedy Running Scared, climbed into the Top Ten.

Instead of capitalizing on his revitalized success, McDonald didn't release another album until 1990. The resulting Take It to Heart was a bomb, peaking at number 110. Two years later, his fortunes were revived somewhat when he sang on Aretha Franklin's minor hit "Ever Changing Times" and toured with Donald Fagen's New York Rock and Soul Revue. The following year, he released Blink of an Eye, which was ignored. In 1994, "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)" was sampled heavily in Warren G's smash hit "Regulate." By 1996, McDonald had returned to the Doobie Brothers, touring the oldies circuit with the reunited group. The following year, McDonald released Blue Obsession, his first album of new material in three years. He released a Christmas album (In the Spirit: A Christmas Album) in 2001, and began a series of recordings devoted to the Motown catalog with 2003's Motown. Motown Two and Soul Speak followed in 2004 and 2008 respectively.

DOOBIE BROTHERS - ONE STEP CLOSER - ORIGINAL 1980 RELEASE

Album Notes
Doobie Brothers: Patrick Simmons, John McFee (vocals, guitar); Cornelius Bumpus (vocals, saxophone, organ); Michael McDonald (vocals, keyboards); Keith Knudsen (vocals, drums); Tiran Porter (bass); Chet McCracken (drums, percussion).Additional personnel: Christopher Thompson, Nicolette Larson (vocals); Joel Peskin (baritone saxophone); Jerome Jumonville (saxophone); Bill Armstrong, Lee Thornburg (trumpet); Patrick Henderson (keyboards); Bobby LaKind, Ted Templeman (percussion). The Doobie's last album before hanging it up for nearly a decade featured new personnel (in particular hot shot guitarist John McFee). But Michael McDonald was still running the show with his firm grasp on sophisticated pop soul. The title track here could be the best thing McDonald ever did, mating an ebullient tune in his "What a Fool Believes" style with a chorus that borders on power pop. Nothing else quite matches that, although "Real Love" and "Keep This Train A Rollin'" come close. "South Bay Strut" continues the band's tradition of including tempo changes in the instrumental breaks; it's a slick piece of fusion jazz that lets McFee strut his stuff.
