DR. STRANGELY STRANGE ‘HEAVY PETTING’ NEAR MINT 1970 VINYL LP (MACHINE STAMPED 1Y#1 + 2Y#1 STAMPER CODES) IN FOLDOUT SLEEVE AND ORIGINAL SWIRL VERTIGO INNER SLEEVE

Please be aware that I am re-listing this LP.  There is a very, very, very light and entirely inaudible mark which is so light that I missed it in my first listing.  Full details in the ‘Record Condition’ description.

Sleeve Condition: Near to Top copy!  This famous, Roger Dean designed sleeve is such a delicate and easily damaged sleeve that few survive without tears or at least creasing across the vertical flaps.  This one has been exceptionally well looked after, kept in a plastic sleeve all its life and is free of any kind of damage, defect, writing or marking.  An almost imperceptible bump to one corner is the only blemish and one has to look hard for it.  Ex+ to Near Mint.  Comes complete with original lined, Swirl Vertigo inner sleeve in similar, uncreased, Near Mint condition. 

Record Condition: Free from discernable centring marks on the label, I doubt that this has been played more than a few times in its entire life.  The record shows very little evidence of handling, let alone play wear, apart form one, very, very light, hair-like mark on one Side A.  It is so light that in fact I missed it the first time I listed this but in view of the rarity and desirability of the record I withdrew it and am now relisting it with this new information.  This really qualifies as sleeve withdrawal marking and in now way constitutes as scratch or material damage.  It does not in any way, sound on play and no turntable or exotic stylus and arm setup would be able to detect it in the slightest.

It still has that satisfying, deep, luster that only vinyl from this era has when it has spent most of its life in its sleeve.  Music quality is stunning.  This is the best example of this record I have ever seen and actually beats my own copy.  It’s a lovely example of a rare and desirable record and sleeve in pretty near top condition.  This has, as all genuine copies of the rarity have, the machine etched matrix codes stamped into both sides of the runout grooves.

`Heavy Petting' is the second album by Dr.Strangely Strange, the experimental Irish folk group beloved of the late broadcaster John Peel. Although a short-lived outfit, the good Doctor has been favourably compared to The Incredible String Band and their work has achieved cult status among record collectors.

Formed in Dublin in 1967, the original group comprised Tim Booth (vocals, guitar), Ivan Pawle (bass and keyboards) and singer Tim Goulding. They augmented the line up with guest musicians for this album, including 16-year-old Gary Moore, later to achieve fame with Thin Lizzy. Gary's fluent guitar provides some of the best moments on this diverse and entertaining set of original songs, beefed up by drummer Dave Mattacks.

Joe Boyd, the young American based in London, produced `Heavy Petting', which was first released on the Vertigo label in 1970. The album has eleven tracks, including such quirky songs, such as `Ballad Of Wasps', `Summer Breeze', and `I Gave My Love An Apple'. There are hymns and laments, country jigs and boogie riffs - all played with lively enthusiasm and innocent charm. `Kilmanoyadd Stomp' has Ivan Pawle playing harmonium, while Goulding plays the recorder, which adds to the traditional flavour.

The now famous, intricate foldout sleeve is of course credited to the even more famous Roger Dean.
