American indie outfit The Drums traded the sun-bleached jangle of their debut for something colder and more brittle with their second album, Portamento, back in 2011. Opener 'Book of Revelation' sets a bleak, wave-drenched tone, while 'Money' became the record's breakout moment and is still moody, minimal and unmistakably theirs. Overall, it's a darker, more absorbing turn for the crew, with frontman Jonny Pierce's melodrama still defining tracks like 'How It Ended' and 'I Need a Doctor', which have aged well and cemented Portamento as a cult favourite among post-punk revivalists.
