DULCIMER – And I Turned As I Had Turned As A Boy ORIG Nepentha LP / 6437 003 (UK, Stereo, 1971)
Happy to present Nepentha number 3 in its original 1971 UK press. I don’t think this LP was repressed at the time which is a shame because it stands up as one of the best examples of British acid folk – with unusual instrumentation and great artwork.
The non-laminated gatefold sleeve shows no reference to manufacture. It lies nice and flat with no rippling or and has no writing. There are no tears or splits and the opening edge is still pretty sharp showing little feathering. These are the main blemishes: (remember I outline ALL wear and ageing!) there is moderate rubbing to the top and bottom edges, slight rubs to the front and rear top and bottom sections (not through the colour) some tiny chipping to the spine (text still there and legible) and a vague ring impression to the rear (not easily picked up). Some age spots inside the gate which is otherwise great. Some corner wear and softening mainly to the spine side. No stickers, residue, paper loss. Just general shelf wear really over its 40 years but nothing major and still attractive with the impressive artwork not sullied. Grades a true VG+ (Very Good Plus) not trashed!
The iconic Nepentha labels are in a pleasing condition with no writing, stickers or residue. Not too much in the way of spindle evidence but some slight toning around the centre hole.
The sharp, medium to medium/heavy weight vinyl has survived the last four decades in good shape. First thing to say is that IT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY LISTENED TO and plays CLOSE TO MINT, which of course is what you want from a quiet folk LP. I only picked up a few (very) light ticks on Track 1 of Side 2 and a short patch of crackle on the Side 2 run out. Other than that there are NO loud pops, NO repeated clicks, NO distortion, groove wear or loss of definition. A really enjoyable listening experience! Visually the disc shows some light and soft (not deep, intrusive or heavy) marking – not instantly visible but look close and there are quite a few light scuffs and fine hairlines to both sides. Happy to report though, that none of this affects the play and if you can put up with superficial marks (none deep) then it still looks pleasing. Visual grade of a proper VG (Very Good) but remember play grade is MUCH better than that.
Supplied in its original ‘plastic bags can be dangerous’ inner sleeve (polythene coming loose) this has a VO price code as Nepentha was a Vertigo cousin and is a solid example of the golden age of British acid folk! No reserve.

I do not use any more than ONE plus or minus between grades. After all, WHAT ON EARTH DOES VG+++++ MEAN? What is NM+? Or EX---? These are just some of the ridiculous gradings I’ve encountered on eBay. I am very careful using the EX (Excellent) grade. Excellent, by dictionary definition means ‘extremely good’ NOT ‘marked and slightly beat up with wear’!
