Dusty Springfield's Golden Hits marks a line of demarcation in the British soul legend's recording career, at least from the standpoint of the U.S.. The album itself is a jewel of a collection -- listening to it 50 years later, even after all of the ubiquitous compilations of Springfield's music that have appeared, it's still an amazing experience; the songs are killers, every one of them -- any one of them could still rate multiple successive listens as singles, and a few ("You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," "I Only Want to Be with You," "In the Middle of Nowhere") compulsive repetition by otherwise level-headed listeners. And no compilation of work, hits or otherwise, by any other female artist, from England or America, could so successfully embody the transatlantic/multi-racial nature of mid-'60s pop/rock. Dusty Springfield's Golden Hits is the mother-lode of the lady's early hits. The songs are alluring and addictive and intense -- indeed, there's an almost narcotic-like effect to this album, even five decades later. Golden Hits was the beginning of a last look at her first manifestation as a pop/soul goddess -- before she began moving in more rarefied circles of musical excellence.
