Description
From 1959, one of the most famous records in American jazz, 'Time Out' by the Dave Brubeck Quartet. Released by Columbia Records (CS-8192) in December of 1959, it immediately made waves due to the complex and unorthodox arrangements and time signatures. The big hit of course, was Paul Desmond's 'Take Five'; a song with the most bizarre of all metres. What is most remarkable about this incredibly well-known tune is the extent to which it constantly escapes the 5/4 count and swings.
On offer is a rare, early U.S. pressing from 1959 on the Columbia "6-Eye" labels. What makes this rarer still is the fact that it is in Stereo and not the more common Mono. The cover is also an early printed version as it does not make any mention of the song 'Take Five' on the front.
Cover: Excellent(+).....considering it's age, this jacket is in wonderful condition. The colors on the front side are still vivid and striking. The thick cardboard sleeve has only some minor evidence of scuffing and bowing; the spine is perfectly rigid with 95% of the text still easily legible. A beautiful example of one of the most famous jackets in American jazz.
Original Inner-Sleeve: Excellent(+).....very rarely do we find the original inner-sleeve with this early release. Great condition with only 2 splits (which can easily be repaired) and a faint imprint of a cup on one side. A better quality inner will be included to house the precious record.
Record: Excellent(+) .....incredibly hard to find an early pressing in this kind of condition. Both labels are in wonderful shape showing few signs of play. The thick and rigid vinyl has nice gloss and shows only superficial lines and markings which do not affect playback at all. In fact, the majority of the songs play Excellent + and even higher. Only 2 songs ('Strange Meadow Lark', 'Kathy's Waltz') grade slightly lower (VG ~ VG+) due to some mild surface noise. Overall, the audio from this pressing was very impressive; the drum solos by Joe Morello on 'Take Five' and 'Everybody's Jumpin'' never sounded so defined and detailed.
