Description

DAVID BOWIE - 'DAVID BOWIE'

1969 UK 1st PRESSING PHILIPS LP

Released almost exactly 40 years ago on 4th November 1969, this is widely acknowledged as Bowie's 1st 'proper' album.
It was re-titled 'Man of words/Man of Music' in the U.S. but despite its brilliance it sold poorly & was swiftly deleted re-appearing again as 'Space Oddity' on RCA in 1972, albeit without the track 'Don't Sit Down'.

This extremely rare & exceptional UK 1969 1st pressing is on the black & silver Philips label: SBL.7912

The disc is housed within an unlaminated UK printed gatefold cover, beautifully designed by acclaimed Hungarian/French artist Victor Vasarely.

Complete with its original poly-lined inner-sleeve.

Matrix numbers: 852146 1Y//2* & 852146 2Y//2

Disc weight: 141g

Labels: EXCELLENT +

A perfectly clean and unblemished pair with, as you can see, just a handful of spindle trails around each centre hole.

Visual: EXCELLENT +

Both playing surfaces of this immaculate copy are pristine & 'as new' in strong daylight with no surface marks or wear whatsoever on the deep-gloss shine.

Close & careful inspection directly beneath my unforgiving powerful halogen desk lamp reveals little more than a sparkling rainbow gloss shine & a small number of harmless wispy paper-type hairlines consistent with the few times this copy has been removed from its inner-sleeve. However there is no other trace or surface wear whatsoever to either playing surface - both of which lie 100% flat on the turntable with no signs of dishing or warping.

Play: NEAR MINT

It is clear that from the silent side 1 run-in & noise-free fade-in to 'Space Oddity' that this outstanding copy has been barely played. My careful play check at volume continued without coming across any traces of groove/play wear or indeed any other audible blemish. There were certainly no clicks, pops or any other such distraction on or between any track. A really outstanding copy which would be difficult to upgrade.

Cover

EXCELLENT

A really top-class example of this amazing cover.

The front leaf is clean & vibrant with just a hint of light storagewear rubbing but no 'thumbnails' spine bends or any other creasing.

The cover's only significant blemish is the ghost of a sticker in the upper right corner which has causes a some minor damage to where it once was affixed.

All corners are free from any major bumps, showing only slight rubbing from storage. All opening edges are clean & sharp with no tears or feathering.

The magnificent rear panel is immaculate with unfaded vivd colours and no disc impression or storagewear issues.

The inside of the gatefold is rich and dark blue with just a single 'thumbnail' crease to the right panel but no marks, writing or missing paper.
(The image above shows some reflection of the disc in the left panel. This is not rubbing or wear.)

There is a little light rubbing to the upper seam, but all are unstressed and unsplit. The spine is unbent, un-rubbed and fully worded.
