The band "David and the Giants" was active from the 1960s to the 1990s, but there are two distinct intervals within this time frame. Early on, the group - which had formed in Laurel, Mississippi in 1964, recorded secular rock songs and achieved regional success in the Southeast United States. They issued six different singles. In some of these, they were augmented by the Muscle Shoals (Alabama) Horns. In the early 1970s, they were regularly performing with such artists as Styx, Chuck Berry, and Cheech and Chong. By 1977, all the band members had become born-again Christians. They continued to perform issuing about 17 LPs of Christian rock.
The record I am selling belongs to the bands first (secular) period. Moreover, it might be the first recording that featured a new band member, Keith Thibodeaux, on drums. He joined "David and the Giants" in 1969. Under the name "Richard Keith", he had starred as "Little Ricky" in the TV sitcom I Love Lucy. (He was something of a prodigy on drums having appeared professionally with the Horace Heidt Band at the age of 3. His aced his audition for Lucille Ball by doing a drum solo!) Thibodeaux developed drug issues and, after becoming a born again Christian, withdrew from the band in 1974. He returned to "David and the Giants" in 1977 after being instrumental in the religious conversion of the rest of the band.
The song Superlove on the record I am selling has some great drum solos. The band members are not credited on the label but the date of the record would be consistent with the first Keith Thibodeaux era with "David and the Giants".
