Deadline was a fundamental short-lived band in the early Washington, D.C. hardcore punk scene. The history of this record is a classic tale of a "lost gem" that finally found its way to viny! years after the band split. Dischord Records:
The history of this legendary D.C. hardcore artifact unfolds across several distinct chapters:
1. Formation and the D.C. Scene (1981-
1982)
Deadline formed in the summer of 1981. The lineup featured a group of musicians who would become central figures in the underground music scene: i
• Ray Hare (Vocals)
• Christian Caron (Guitar)
• Terry Scanlon (Bass)
• Brendan Canty (Drums) - who later went on to play drums for the highly influential bands Rites of spring and Fugazi.
In September 1981, they recorded a demo session at the legendary Inner Ear Studios with Don Zientara.
Three tracks from that session-"Stolen Youth," "Hear the Cry," and "Aftermath"— were chosen for the seminal 1982 Dischord Records compilation Flex Your Head, which put the band on the map alongside bands like Minor Threat and The Teen Idles. @
2. The Final Session and Disbandment
Throughout late 1981 and 1982, Deadline played regular shows in the D.C. area, famously opening for influential punk bands like Flipper at the original 9:30

In August of 1982, just before deciding to break up, the band entered Inner Ear Studios one last time to document the rest of their fast, aggressive setlist. The exact date of this final recording session-August 2, 1982—gave the release its title: 8/2/82. Following the session, the master tapes sat unreleased, turning the session into a legendary "lost" D.C. hardcore tape for the remainder of the decade. Dischord Records: +1
3. The Peterbilt Release (1989)
In the late 1980s, Guy Picciotto (of Rites of Spring and Fugazi) founded Peterbilt Records. The label wasn't intended to be a commercial venture, but rather a passion project dedicated to releasing archival material and overlooked music from the D.C. scene.

Peterbilt rescued Deadline's final August 1982 tapes and officially released them in 1989 as a one-sided
12-inch vinyl EP. Dischord Records:
To keep production costs low and maintaining a DIY aesthetic, Peterbilt packaged the vinyl inside its signature manila envelope outer sleeves rather than standard cardboard record jackets. The artwork features a striking yellow background with a black photo collage of the band members. Because it was a limited DIY run, the original vinyl went out of print and became a highly sought-after collector's item. a
4. Preservation
The music was eventually preserved for wider distribution in 2007, when Dischord Records partnered with Peterbilt to re-issue 8/2/82 onto CD and digital formats, ensuring that this crucial piece of early D.C. hardcore history remained accessible. ®
