Up for auction is this rare copy of Death Cab For Cutie’s “Something About Airplanes” (first pressing from 1998 on black vinyl with a die cut cover) on Sonic Boom Recordings! You can tell it isn’t the reissue because of the red labels- very rare! In fact, almost impossible to find on the Internet for sale, let alone at a decent price! You can easily get the anniversary reissue, but you can’t easily get this original first pressing.
The reissue was a limited pressing of 2000. I’d imagine this release was fewer, but I don’t think there was a specified amount that they kept track of.
As a rating, the sleeve is in Very Good condition while the record itself is also in Very Good condition. I’ve taken pictures of some of the flaws- namely some very light superficial marks on the record that do not affect play. There are also some marks on the record’s label as if someone had trouble positioning it on a turntable on both sides, but that certainly does not affect play. The sleeve and cardstock insert both have two tiny holes on the top of them. Thankfully, the vellum insert doesn’t have this, but it has some slight wear. Also, the cover has some slight dirt on it, but this can certainly be removed through cleaning. I’m just not brave enough to attempt it! I don’t want to hurt the sleeve. As you can see by the pictures, it's in way better condition than it sounds!
I’m being very honest about the condition here. This is a very valuable record in this condition. It’s over 10 years old now. This record was purchased at a record store used. I do believe it had only one owner who apparently (according to the cashier) also brought in an original pressing of Neutral Milk Hotel’s “Aeroplane” record. Wow! I’m shocked he/she didn’t try selling either online!
If this is the kind of thing you fancy, I suggest you bid on it because it will absolutely not be easy to get your hands on after this. I’m shocked I managed to! This is a wonderful debut by DCFC and, in my opinion, probably their second best record. Their best, of course, is “We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes”. If I found THAT on vinyl, oh man!
