I adhere to the Goldmine standard when grading vinyl records.
The Goldmine grading scale consists of the following standard conditions:
- Mint (M): Absolutely perfect in every way. The record has never been played, is usually sealed in factory shrink-wrap, and the cover has no flaws. This is generally reserved for brand new copies still in cellophane and as such you should expect similar condition to that, minus the cellophane.
- Near Mint (NM or M-): Considered nearly perfect. The vinyl retains its original glossy shine and clearly has only been played a handful of times. A very minor scuff and very little else can appear on the vinyl. It should play without any noise over the flaw. The flaw is very hard to see. The cover looks as close to perfect with only minor signs of wear and or age. The spine is intact and clearly readable.
- Very Good Plus (EX/VG+): Shows light signs of use. The record may have slight scuffs or very light scratches that do not impact the listening experience. The sleeve may show faint ring wear or corner dings.
- Very Good (VG): Noticeable surface wear. The record may have light scratches that produce soft pops and clicks, especially in quiet passages or between tracks, but it plays through without skipping. The sleeve may feature obvious ring wear, writing, or seam splits.
- Good (G) / Good Plus (G+): Significantly worn. While it plays through without skipping, groove wear, scratches, and surface noise will be loud enough to overwhelm the music. The sleeve will have major tears, tape, or severe seam splits.
- Fair (F) and Poor (P): Heavily damaged, warped, or cracked. Records in these conditions will likely skip or be completely unplayable and are generally only kept as placeholders.
