I know of no other album quite like it. With Pacific Ocean Blue Dennis Wilson takes a number of fairly nondescript songs, and by using what must have been a powerful genetic gift for arranging music, with a previously unrecognized expansive musical vision and willingness to take risks in a song, and with a surprising depth of emotion for someone who lived as shallow a life as a person can probably live, Dennis Wilson alone of any Beach Boy created a masterpiece with his solo album. I know I should take a point off the rubric score for bad lyrics, but I can’t bring myself to do it – this deserves to be a ten star album. No question. It is truly a thing of power and beauty.
