This handsome and elusive LP from Ducretet Thomson (CC 508, French pressing, brown label mono) features Volume VIII in the label's "Pierre Dervaux · Concerts Colonne · XIXe Siècle Grands Concertos" series, this issue devoted to a remarkable 'live' performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 35 by the brilliant Devy Erlih.

Taped in concert with Dervaux and the Concerts Colonne on 21 January 1962, this is a performance imbued with a tremendous sense of occasion, and very well recorded, too – one can 'hear' the hall, the acoustic warm and spacious. Erlih's interpretation and playing is all one could with for, as is Dervaux's accompaniment – has the second movement Conzonetta (andante) ever been done better than this, arched to perfection, the woodwind playing as inspired as Erlih's – wonderful in every way. And this is the stereo issue.

There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Tolia Nikiprowetzky, printed in French only. The striking cover design was executed by Maurice Tapiero.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. There is minuscule corner wear and mild discoloration to the rear panel, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, a very fine collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Visually, there is a small sticker tear to the label on Side 1. In therms of sound, although the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.
