Dexter Gordon: A Swingin’ Affair.
Blue Note label, New York. 1964.
Original U.S. import. Van Gelder stamped run out grooves with “ear” symbol.
This is a nice, tidy, original American copy of this Dexter Gordon album issued in 1964 (or maybe 1963?). This one was imported into the UK at the time and still has its original import duty stamps to the back cover. It was retailed by Chappell & Co in London.
The record itself is in pretty good shape. There are some slight surface marks to both side and the traditional light “skating” mark across Side One where the arm has been knocked all the way across. Although visible, this latter is light enough not to affect the sound. All told, the record plays very well with no clicks or crackles. These Blue Note records were pressed in heavy vinyl, so it takes a lot to cause them significant damage. It looks like this one may have been only rarely played.
The sleeve is clean and undamaged to the front. There is a some faint staining to the bottom at the back which is visible in the photo above. The label is nice and clean on both sides. The record has the name of celebrated recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder stamped into the run out grooves on both sides (in the form “VAN GELDER”). The run out grooves also have the Blue Note “ear” symbol. I believe the recording was made in 1962, just a couple of days after the recording of Dexter Gordon’s classic album Go! The label has no date but most online sources give the issue year as 1964.
