Description
One of the rarest LPs in the Dial discography—this 10†compilation from 1951 showcases eight different contenders for the title of “Mr. Saxophone.â€
Personnel: Wardell Gray (Spelled “Grey†on cover), Dexter Gordon, Teddy Edwards, Charlie Parker, Don Byas, Arne Domnerus, Serge Chaloff, James Moody.
Cover is VG+ to EX with some yellowing around the edges and some minor wear to the front title sticker. Incredibly, there are no splits and absolutely no damage anywhere, other than a small area on back--the paper is slightly thinner where a sticker was removed.
Disc is EX with only a very few light marks, only one or two of which can be heard during play. Side one shows a light residue that causes it to play with a lot of surface noise. Side two is clean and plays much quieter. The sound would probably be improved by a good machine cleaning, but I prefer to leave that to the discretion of the winning bidder. Overall, the disc is very glossy and nearly new-looking!
Labels are EX with a couple of very faint spindle trails and tiny areas of flaking along the deep-groove, but perfectly centered with no stickers, stains or writing.
For collectors of any of these sax legends, and completists of the Dial label, this LP is an important and essential item—don’t miss out on this one!
