Description
This is Dick Heckstall Smith’s RARE FIRST RECORDING, three tracks on “University Jazz” a 10” Oriole LP from 1956 number MG10010.
In a VERY long lifetime of collecting records, I have only ever found TWO copies of this staggeringly uncommon album.
I gave one of them to Dick Heckstall Smith himself, at a gig in the 1980’s (he was very pleased, as he’d lost his only copy many years before).
This one here is a spare one that I paid a small fortune for in a PROPER COLLECTOR’S SHOP.
It’s a compilation LP featuring seven UK university bands.
Dick plays soprano sax, (very much influenced by Sidney Bechet) on three tracks by The Cambridge University Jazz Band. They are “Easy Rider” (actually Tampa Red’s “I Wonder Where My Easy Rider’s Gone”) “Revolutionary Blues” and “Back To Earth”
The other tracks are by university bands from Oxford, Nottingham, Edinburgh, Birmingham, Liverpool and Leeds.
THIS LP IS ADVERTISED BY OTHER SELLERS ON VARIOUS SITES AT COLOSSAL PRICES. One Charlie also goes so far as to suggest that “Peter Green” on Banjo with the another band is the famous reclusive Fleetwood Mac person.
If it is him, he would have been ten years old and at Oxford University at the time of recording, which I reckon is unlikely!
The disc is pretty darn good, although not totally perfect. It does play very well, with the odd slight tick here and there which ain’t bothersome, and is, I think, well collectable.
It has a few visible light marks. I would rate it as a good solid VG or better.
The sleeve, which is made by pasting two slicks onto a white sub-sleeve show signs of having been stored somewhere damp-ish at some time.
It is slightly “rippled” (see photo). Again, this is not too worrisome, I think.
Let’s call that a nice clean VG.
The whole thing is MUCH better than my original copy that Dick was so happy to be given back in the eighties.
It can be yours! It’s been a miserable twelve months and you deserve it.
I am not a dealer.
I am just an old bloke thinning out his lifetime collection of records before the floor collapses.
I'm selling most of this stuff for much less than I paid for it.
What a great business plan (I don't think)!
The LP in the photograph is the LP you will get.
I have described the item to the best of my ability, and everything looks in OK condition to me.

Regular visitors to my listings will wonder where Mr Fuffy, the ferocious one-eyed feral cat is. He normally insists on appearing in the photographs I take for eBay. He didn’t turn up on this particular occasion, but I have attached a recent portrait of him to my entry, to make up for any disappointment.price rating
