Item Description

Here is your chance to own a very Rare original Beatles related 1960’s acetate Demo Disc. This one features the Lennon McCartney song ‘There’s A Place’ performed by 2 different artists. On one side is a version by the Kestrels, which was issued on the UK 45 A-side Piccadilly 7N 35126 in 1963. The other side is a version by Bobby Sansom & the Giants which was issued on the UK 45 A-side Oriole CB1837 in 1963. Both are vocal versions with quite different backing arrangements. This song provided Bobby Sansom with their first UK single & it was the Kestrels penultimate single. The Kestrels were an established vocal group who released a number of records between 1959 & 1963. Neither act charted in the UK with their version of this Beatles song. The Beatles included it on their Twist & Shout EP.

This acetate disc is 6.5 inches in diameter & plays at 45rpm. The disc has Melodisc labels on both sides. The Dick James Demo Disc labels are stuck over the Melodisc labels. This is normal practice. The printed (red) label has a lot of information typed on in blue. In addition, on the Kestrels side there is a small numbered sticker used by the record company/owner to catalogue his records. This acetate was part of a large collection obtained from someone in the music business.

An acetate is a transitional stage between the master tape and the finished vinyl record. It is metal plate covered in a layer of acetone. Very few are made and they are distributed to people directly involved with the recording in order that they can approve the sound before the record is cut. They also tend to be far less durable than records & are only designed to last for a few plays.

However this disc is in super condition for an acetate. The playing surface has been played & has a few light surface marks. I would grade it a nice EX using a normal vinyl grading system, which is very nice for an acetate. It plays superbly with just a very slight hiss. Please bear in mind that the difference between Mint & Good for an acetate is probably only 10 to 20 plays! The labels are very clean & the disc has been carefully stored for the last 40+ years. This is a super item that would make a nice addition to any 60’s music collection, especially a Beatles collection. You may never get another opportunity to own this record.

Please see the scans. Shipping prices include full registered & insured post to cover everyone in the unlikely event of a problem with the post. Therefore shipping is £5.00 to UK customers, £7.50 to European customers & £8.50 to customers from the Rest of the World. I am not prepared to ship this item uninsured, so please do not bid & then ask for cheaper postage. Thanks.

All records for sale are from my private collection. Please bid with confidence. I have a good feedback rating for grading accurately, packing safely & prompt delivery.
