Released for Record Store Day 2018, this is a beautifully presented vinyl pressing of the televised version of one of Doctor Who’s greatest classics.
Record condition in 'Like New' having never been played - and provided in a plastic sleeve
The story is spread across two discs so that each episode is designated its own side of a record. It comes on green coloured vinyl, which is a pleasant, slightly turquoise, shade rather than something more akin to the darker, greenish hues of Scaroth.
The episodes are the soundtracks of that onscreen but feature narration by Lalla Ward. This narration is as unobtrusive as possible and takes place over periods of incidental music and no dialogue. Ward’s narration mainly fits very well. Although, admittedly, her description of Romana and the Doctor running through the streets of Paris can’t help but lack the magic of the onscreen visuals.
A bit like ‘Shada’, another Douglas Adams contribution to Doctor Who, recent years have offered more ways to enjoy ‘City of Death’. Being one of the few Doctor Who serials to lack a novelisation for several decades it has now received two (of sorts), the last being published shortly before this vinyl edition of the story has been released.
Even if you have the DVD and the novelisation, though, this is still a worthwhile purchase (if, indeed, you can get hold of it and possess a record player) as listening to the story on audio showcases just how brilliant and entertaining the dialogue is, both in the writing and the performance.
"City Of Death" is a classic Doctor Who story from 1979, starring the fourth Doctor Tom Baker, Lalla Ward and Julian Glover. Featuring linking narration by Lalla Ward. Previously unreleased on vinyl, the two hour story is presented on 2LP heavyweight translucent green vinyl, and featuring newly commissioned gatefold artwork, sleevenotes and on set photos. Whilst sightseeing in Paris, the Doctor and Romana notice a series of unexplained temporal disturbances. When a visit to the Louvre lands them in hot water, they realise that a certain Count Scarlioni knows more about advanced technology than a 20th-century Parisian should. With British detective Duggan in tow, the time travellers become embroiled in an audacious plot to steal the Mona Lisa and sell it on the open market.
