As their career unfolds, Sunn O))) has been opting increasingly for emotional drama and atmosphere in place of the standard volume and power. The methods that leader Stephen O'Malley and company employ to achieve this aura of funereal dread have varied from guest vocalists singing in coffins to, on their latest album, pipe organs and Gregorian chants. DOMKIRKE, recorded live in an ancient cathedral in Bergen, Norway, will only be released on 180 gram vinyl, a move that speaks to their dedication to full-bodied analog sound. The music is intended to recall the grim hymnals of the medieval Church, with slow melodies seeping into space as the fear of the Black Death enveloped Europe. Composed of four long songs, DOMKIRKE is challenging listening, but timeless as cathedral stone.
