The classic story of Orpheus concerns a renowned musician who is so distraught over the death of his wife, Eurydice, that he attempts to rescue her from the Underworld, the place of the dead. Orpheus, the son of the muse Calliope and the Thracian king Oeagrus, is renowned for his extraordinary musical talent. His music could charm animals and even influence nature itself. He falls deeply in love with Eurydice, a beautiful nymph, and they marry in a joyous ceremony. However, their happiness is short-lived as Eurydice is tragically bitten by a snake shortly after their wedding, leading to her untimely death.
Devastated by the loss of his wife, Orpheus decides to venture into the Underworld to retrieve her. Armed with his lyre, he uses his enchanting music to persuade Hades and Persephone, the rulers of the Underworld, to allow Eurydice to return to the living world. They agree, but with one crucial condition: Orpheus must not look back at Eurydice until they have both exited the Underworld.
As they ascend, Orpheus, overwhelmed by doubt and longing, looks back just before reaching the exit, causing Eurydice to vanish forever. This tragic ending underscores the themes of love and the consequences of human frailty.
