Donald Byrd & Gigi Gryce on RCA Lacquer
This is a rare and possibly unique recording: the original RCA reference lacquer from the Donald Byrd/ Gigi Gryce New York studio session of July 31, 1957 - a recording that has never been issued in the U.S. (all issues are either from Japan or France). Side 1 is in nearly new condition with a high luster, showing no groove wear; the first track of Side 2 has an area of audible wear that produces sporadic light tics, while the remaining two tracks on that side appear as near-new; a few acetate flakes along the edge of Side 2 that have no effect on the music. The lacquer comes from the collection of Dom Cerulli, former Director of Advertising and Publicity for RCA. The accompanying paper sleeve has the following pencil notations: in the upper left corner “H4JP – 7037, 7038, Don Byrd, can be mastered as is”; in the upper right corner “from Dom Cerulli”.
