Donald Byrd

"At The Half Note Cafe, Volume 1"

"Jazz On The WaterFront"

with Pepper Adams, Duke Pearson, Laymon Jackson, Lex Humphries

Thick vinyl pressing on Blue Note Records, catalog #84060, stereo. Has the "47 WEST 63rd NYC" address on the label and "RVG STEREO" stamped in the dead wax. Made in USA. Has the 1966 inner sleeve.

The vinyl is near mint, two light surface marks in an otherwise glossy finish, a long spindle mark that does not affect play, and two small marks on one side of the record caused by years of storage, little marks, but they do not affect play noticeably either, very little in the way of extraneous noises, a great sounding record, and a killer session! Has the original inner sleeve too which is from 1966. The cover is in beautiful condition, near mint, it still had the original shrink wrap on when it came into the shop (see pics), no ringwear, the spine and seams are fine, no wear or splits.

Donald Byrd's At the Half Note Cafe... this is the live date showcasing the Byrd quintet with Pepper Adams (and with Duke Pearson, Lex Humphries, and Laymon Jackson in the rhythm section), this is one of the most essential hard bop purchases in the canon. The performances of Pearson showcase his improvisational acumen at its height. His soloing on studio records pales in comparison. This was a hot quintet, one that not only swung hard, but possessed a deep lyricism and an astonishing sense of timing, and one need only this set by them to feel the full measure of their worth. Forget the Riverside date that caught them live early on; this is the one. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
