Description

Donovan "The Hurdy Gurdy Man"           (Epic BN 26420)

First US pressing from 1968 in Stereo.

This LP is famous for featuring members of what would become Led Zeppelin as session musicians on the title track.  John Paul Jones, who played bass on this record (and, of course, on many a Led Zeppelin album) was responsible for hiring session musicians for the recording of the title song "Hurdy Gurdy Man".  Jimi Hendrix was Donovan's first choice to play guitar on the track but was unavailable.  Jones then hired Jimmy Page to play guitar ... and John Bonham to play drums.  Months later, Page formed Led Zeppelin with Jones and Bonham ... and the rest, as they say, is history.

This record was produced by Mickie Most, who did the same for numerous bands (The Animals, The Nashville Teens and Herman's Hermits included), and was engineered by Eddie Kramer, who worked for many years in the same capacity with Jimi Hendrix.

Vinyl:  Mint

To the best of my knowledge, this LP has never been played.  The wax is flawless.  Looks like new.  (Note:  This Donovan LP is one of a dozen or so that I secured in an estate sale, most of which are in this same condition.  That is, wax looks unplayed.  Jackets show modest wear as they were not stored covered by plastic sleeves.  More from this group will be listed in days to come.)

Labels are bright and clean.  No spindle marks.

                                                                                      (SEE PHOTOS)

Jacket:  VG+

Jacket in VG+ condition, with clear and rich colors, front and back.

Modest ring wear present front and back.

Only very slight wear on top and bottom seams.  No top or bottom seam split.  Spine paper is missing in two locations, areas 1/2 inch and 1/4 inch in length, but missing spine paper cannot be seen as the jacket is viewed straight on.  The missing spine paper is not in the spine print area, so the spine print is clearly legible.  The spine is not split.

No writing nor stamps nor stickers.

My Profile / Policies:

Music is my passion.  I’ve been a collector for more than 50 years and have thousands of records in my personal collection, focused largely on 50’s and 60’s rock ‘n’ roll.  Recently retired, I look to downsize and sell select portions of my collection in hopes of financing future purchases of a few special pieces.

All records I offer are from my personal collection, each cleaned using my Nitty Gritty Record Cleaning Machine.

All are play graded (not just visually graded), employing Goldmine Price Guide standards.

As I take great care to accurately describe my items, I do not accept returns unless my item description is incorrect.

All records are packaged with the wax outside the jacket (to avoid seam split in transit), enclosed in a plastic sleeve and shipped in robust record mailer boxes via USPS Media Mail, tracking included.

Payment expected within 3 business days of auction closing.
