First released in 1989, Doolittle, the second Pixies album, was an instant hit with both critics and fans. It’s slow burn success has helped it to sell well beyond Gold status in Canada and close to a million copies in the US. Among the praise thrown Doolittle’s way, Pitchfork ranked it at Number 4 in their Best Albums of the 80s poll, while NME writers in 2004 named it their second best album of all time. 2009 saw the band tour the album to celebrate its 20th birthday and 5 years on, they’ve decided it’s now time to give it the deluxe release treatment it deserves.

The triple vinyl version tracklisting includes the B-sides, the Peel Sessions, the album demos, as well as the original album pressed on three 180g black vinyl LPs. Again, this comes with new art from Vaughan Oliver which is different to the CD art. The download card included offers MP3s of the LP’s tracklisting plus the 7 bonus demo tracks.

One guy who famously dug it was Kurt Cobain, and as Nirvana fans well know, the quiet-loud-quiet dynamic shifts found all over “Doolittle” set the template for much of “Nevermind.” Kurt’s affinity for this record has become a big part of its story, but the other subplots are just as interesting. In their prime, Pixies were like a freaky alt-rock version of the Fantastic Four, and here, their powers combine in some truly bizarre ways.

Up front, you’ve got Thing-like singer and rhythm guitarist Black Francis, a wordy, worldly bellower with apocalyptic visions and a colourful way of interpreting the Bible. To his right, there’s lead guitarist Joey Santiago, the Silver Surfer in search of new sounds to devour. Over there is bassist Kim Deal, the Not- Quite-Invisible Woman, whose plodding eighth notes and sugary background vocals give so many of these songs their much-needed smidgeon of prettiness. Behind her is Dave Lovering, a Human Torch of a drummer who secretly wants to sing groaner love ballads in airport bars.

Cart handles and gloved hands are sanitized after each transaction. High contact surfaces are disinfected regularly. Sanitizer is provided for customer use.  Customers must wear a mask. Please do NOT come if you are feeling ill (even mild), had recent contact with somebody ill, or have traveled within the last 14 days.
