Description
The Doors, Self-Titled Debut Elektra Mono EKL-4007, Authentic First Press Labels: Have neither a stereo or mono attribution; Dead Wax: "(A)" on both sides.
FYI: (1) It is my understanding the best way to date the pressing is by the publishing credit on "Alabama Song (Whiskey Bar)." The first press had "Witmark," thereafter it was changed to "Harms Co." (2) It is very difficult to get a noise-free (or largely noise-free) original copy. Partly this is because Elektra "farmed out" both the mastering and the pressing to various subcontractors, none of them all that great. Thus the "(A)" on the dead wax signifies, I believe, the subcontractor, possibly Allentown Record Company. The style of the label also, I believe, depended on the particular subcontractor. (3) By general consensus, the Mono pressing is considered notably superior to the stereo pressing. Vinyl: Near Mint Minus... On the A-side, there is a click, on the 2nd track I think. Otherwise, flawless and beautiful. The B-side has some seconds of low-volume surface noise in a few places, particularly the last track, but it overwhelmingly verges on the barely-audible level. Quite difficult to find a 1st pressing in this condition, I believe.
Covers: Excellent Minus... There is ring-wear, as you can see, and some rubbing along the edges but no fraying. In particular the spine is completely readable and in fine shape. Completely structurally sound with clear graphics, especially on the back cover. Overall, has the appearance of an old but very carefully-stored album.
Packaging includes new audiophile inner sleeve, new outer sleeve, cardboard padding, bubble-wrap and a thick cardboard record box.
