redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This lovely LP from Mercury (MG 51055, US pressing, plum/silver Olympian label, mono) features Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra’s magnificent accounts of Haydn’s Symphonies No. 100 in G Major “Military” and No. 101 in D Major “The Clock”.
These recordings preceded Dorati’s complete Haydn Symphony cycle with the Philharmonia Hungarica (for Decca) and one can hear why the English label was so keen to have him helm that massive undertaking. Dorati’s Haydn is vital and warm, with equal doses of wit and humor, and when called for, beautifully shaded expressiveness and stirring drama.
Both works were recorded in the warm acoustics of Watford Town Hall, London, in July 1957 (producer: Wilma Cozart / engineer: C. Robert Fine).
There are informative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by James Lyons, printed in English only. The striking cover photo was taken by Henry Ries.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the front laminated jacket is near-MINT. Aside from a small bit of writing to the rear panel and minor bumping at corners, the album appears virtually as new. There are no bends, seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an very fine collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Visually, there are non-sounding marks and light spindle trails. In terms of sound, although the surfaces are not completely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a lovely collector's copy.
