ONE OWNER: From the collection of Gary X Indiana. Bought in 1980 from Bob Richert at the Gulcher Records store in Dunkirk Square, Bloomington IN.
About DJATI: Formed by Purdue students in 1979. Chris Clark was the student body VP at some point. Amazingly adept at combining styles from sort of hard punk sound to new wave to no wave to Brad Science's electronic stuff.
About The Gizmos: It's complicated. Local hipster-stoners and cable FM DJs, sort of the more avant-garde locally similar to the MX-80 crew, started this in 1976. Not really "punk" initially, more "trying to be" or "punk-inclined" perhaps. Bob Richert was their Svengali, a la Kim Fowley or Malcolm McLaren. People drifted in and out, four 7" EPs were released, then the lineup became the Dale/Billy/Tim/Shadow crew which recorded the side on this LP, and also had relocated to the NYC area (Hoboken actually) around that time.
About "Hoosier Hysteria!": The cover shows what DJATI's later release "Can't Stand The Midwest" said - the odd love/hate relationship with Indiana. Which, of course, is the age-old story of youth in the hinterlands. Us Hoosiers have a peculiar case of it. Dale Lawrence showed the other side of that with his homesick-in-Hoboken paean "The Midwest Can Be Allright" which the Gizmos recorded in 1981.
Dale went on to co-found the Vulgar Boatmen, which has a sizeable cult following. He and Greg Horn live in the vicinity of owner. Tim North became an artist in San Francisco, occasionally performing as his Hoverdrum act, but died in Los Angeles in 2003. Billy Nightshade died in Minnesota in 2017. Shadow is in LA, while Tim Carroll is an accomplished songwriter and frequent performer in Nashville TN.
