Description

 Jump For Joy
1941 theater program

Very rare theater program for Duke Ellington's 1941 musical revue "Jump For Joy." Subtitled a "Sun-Tanned Revue-sical." Other cast members included Ivie Anderson, Dorothy Dandridge, Herb Jeffries, Marie Bryant and Wonderful Smith. Duke Ellington wrote most of the songs and his orchestra was in the pit. Langston Hughes also wrote a sketch for the play.

This was a groundbreaking all-black musical which focused on black pride and dealt with race relations, lynching, and dispensed with African-American stereotypes such as Uncle Toms as seen in Hollywood and Broadway up to that point. Jump For Joy ran for three months at the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

24 pages with a list of songs, sketches and advertisements.

Condition: very good. It is creased (it was folded down the middle at one point).
