Description
E. BERLINER’S Gramophone Record No. 0292 VERDI’S ATILLA Original Lyric Trio Wm HOOLEY
For your consideration is this 7”, single-sided shellac record. There is no label and instead is etched information identifying Berliner’s Gramophone. Be sure to check out the photos as they are an important part of the description.)
Of particular importance is the date (month missing) 27/99 and the composer’s signature, Wm F Hooley, both hand etched directly into the wax.
Berliner's Gramophone was the first (and for nearly ten years the only) disc record label in the world. Its records were played on Emile Berliner's invention, the Gramophone, which competed with the wax cylinder–playing phonographs that were more common in the 1890s.
Our understanding is that for approximately the first half of 1900, Berliner continued to record and sell records but had limited distribution. Records may have been sold in either brick and mortar locations or through the mail. This may be why it is so hard to find Berliners from the era.
The condition of this record reflects its advanced age. Pictures show a crack. Please take a close look. (We are unable to test the playability of this record.)
This record is perfect to add to your collection of early recordings!
