Description

Historical, 7 inch Emile Berliner Flat Disc, Lateral Cut Recording, Ca.1896. Emile Berliner was the inventer of the flat disc, lateral cut record. With Berliner's invention, records could now be easily and cheaply duplicated in any quantity (It was not until about 1901 that Edison devised a shrinkage method for mass producing cylinders) Edison's invention could now be used as a cheap, mass entertainment medium in the home rather than just for dictation and coin slot, public entertainment.

This recording is "Morning On the Farm"  Farm animal sounds created by N.R. Wood. Includes a cat & dog fight toward the end, announced by Mr. Wood. The record number is: 401 and other label information is as follows: E. Berliner's GRAMOPHONE Patented Nov. 8, 1887  May 15, 1888 - May 6, 1890  Feb. 19, 1895, Oct. 29, 1895 Other Patents Applied For. I'm not sure if this record is pressed on "Vulcanite" or "Duranoid" (Most likely Duranoid ?) This is the last of these discs that I have. The title and artist are hand written in script in the stamper. There is no recording location mentioned. Other numbers handwritten on the stamper are: 77d - 8 1/2 , There is No label on the back of this pressing.

The sound quality on these records is generally Awful and musical interest low, a recording such as this is preserved mainly for it's historical value. The record plays through well and is in Good cosmetic condition for it's age with a number of light scratches. There are no "pock" marks on this pressing. Amid the surface noise, the performance is still easily heard on this record.
