Description
Historical, 7 inch Emile Berliner Flat Disc, Lateral Cut Recording, dated on the record Jun 30,1898. Emile Berliner was the inventer of the flat disc, lateral cut record. With Berliner's invention, records could now be easily and cheaply duplicated in any quantity (It was not until about 1901 that Edison devised a shrinkage method for mass producing cylinders) Edison's invention could now be used as a cheap, mass entertainment medium in the home rather than just for dictation and coin slot, public entertainment.
This recording is "The Blue Bells Scotland" (that is the way the title is written) Cornet solo by Mr. Henry Higgins. Recorded in New York, the record number is: 3405Y and other label information is as follows: E. Berliner's GRAMOPHONE Patented Nov. 8, 1887 May 15, 1888 - May 6, 1890 Feb. 19, 1895 Other Patents Applied For. I'm not sure if this record is pressed on "Vulcanite" or "Duranoid" (Most likely Duranoid ?)
The sound quality on these records is generally Awful and a recording such as this is preserved mainly for it's historical value. However, the Cornet was one of the instruments that the acoustic recording horn was kinder to, so this particular record is less Awful than many of the others. The record plays through well and is in Fair cosmetic condition for it's age with the following flaws: Chip along the outer edge (seen in photo) and two small cracks extending in from the outer edge about 1/2" the record is also "dished" down into the center. The Cornet soloist, Henry Higgins, has signed the master.
