Description
EARL PETERSON Boogie Blues ORIG USA SUN 197 with PUSH MARKS Sam Phillips
Earl Peterson (Michigan's Singing Cowboy), Boogie Blues b/w In The Dark.
Probably recorded January 4, 1954, SUN studio, 706 Union, Memphis Tn.Earl Peterson's one and only SUN single reportedly sold a mere 2672 copies.
(He re-copyrighted and re-recorded 'Boogie blues' for Columbia in October 1954, whilst still under contract with SUN. Columbia released it in February 1955).
Scarce original USA 7" housed in plain sleeve, SUN 197.
Chocolate brown text on yellow background and displaying the distinctive Sun "push marks".
Etched matrix numbers appear to be: 4-102-45 72 and 4-103-45 72. The initial 4s are a little indistinct, but I cannot see them being anything else.
Vinyl surfaces still have a very high gloss and have not dulled or greyed from usage, although there is some minor slightly cloudy greying inherent in the pressing. Close inspection of the surfaces reveals just a few thin and wispy superficial hairline scuff marks. There is a very gentle edge warp which is not really noticeable in casual usage. When placed on the turntable a slight up and down motion of the cartridge is noticeable at the beginning of the sides, but this is not pronounced. I have my cartridge set up at a very light weight and no skipping or jumping is evident.
Playback of the A side is EX, very clean and bright throughout and free of background noise. The B side is mostly similarly clean, but with the addition of a very few instances of "swirly" scuffs (not clicks) near the beginning of the side. There are also just a very few soft and isolated ticks. It is possible that these are inherent in the pressing, as some tiny blip marks (i.e. small raised dots in the pressing) can be detected. It is also possible that the edge warp causes the scuffs, although they are not evident on the first side. Overall however, the B side still provides a solid listening experience, and is free of any other background noise.
Note that any dark patches visible in the photos of the vinyl are merely reflections.
Labels are very clean and bright and free of inscriptions or loss. A small sticker is adhered to the A side, and I have made no attempt to remove this.
All in all a very acceptably clean issue of a single which is tough to locate in any condition.
