Info / Sound: The debut album from the rockabilly star of the 1950s, sadly it proved to be the only album issued in this own lifetime – tragically he was killed in a car crash in 1961. A rare vintage album issued in 1958, this the UK version with a different track listing to the American version, this has 15 tracks. To date, this is one of the oldest albums I have ever offered, and a record that has to be put into perspective. Long playing vinyl records were still in their relative infancy, many, if not most were played to destruction using massive tracking stylus, and even steel gramophone needles. Few will survive in playable condition these days, just like the original first Elvis Presley album and other classic rock n roll greats. Only ones little used on more sympathetic equipment have any hope of pleasing discerning listeners these days. But somewhat against-the-odds, this one has survived very well, and this being played on a very revealing Linn LP12 Sondek with a stereo stylus. Such equipment hardly even existed when this album was manufactured, this was made for the Dansette and other similar record players, this the mono era. American originals were pressed by Liberty Records, in the UK by London Records, part of the Decca company, so quality from day one was assured. Superb tough vinyl, and it had to be, the record is superbly produced and sounded magnificent. Most that surface will be trashed, the cover incredibly flimsy, this one has the non-laminated back, but includes those lovely arc shaped flipbacks as seen in close-up. This one fully intact, but at least moderate creasing to the right corners with laminate lifting. The very heavy record is visually very good, and has avoided penetrating stylus scratches. Most marks are fine and light, and hardly any affect the very impressive sound. Any sound degrading is minimal, infrequent and light – I found it a joy to play-grade and this really has survived well. I am NOT saying it’s perfect, I think any played copy is highly unlikely to ever be, but this gave a lovely enjoyable performance, and I am delighted to offer it. For records of this vintage, the odd polite reminder of what it actually is, is little to no issue for me. It has fantastic warmth and detail, I can imagine the joy this would have given the original owner all those year ago. For a record this age, it is way above average – just one play with a steel needle would have started the sound degrading process, several plays, a right-off. This simply has not happened, and such basic equipment has not been inflicted on this copy. Any surface noise or degrading is minimal, gentle and light, no repetitive clicks were noted. Cochran’s vocal is sublime and the music packs real punch. Within the history of popular music, this is one of the greats, and owning the really early examples is a privilege never to be dismissed or taken lightly. The memory of this legendary performer is etched into these clean and impressive grooves.

Cover Grade and Format: VERY GOOD: I think this a fair grading for a 1950s cover that remains fully intact with no actual damage as such. Made with very thin card and is laminated on the front with Clarifoil. The back panel is unlaminated, it has two vintage arc shaped flipbacks as seen in close-up. These are laminated, as is the ‘spine’ end – it does not have a traditional spine as such, the text is printed on the back as these early covers were. Printed and made in England by J.P, includes the heavy-duty polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The main issue on this cover is laminate lifting, mainly on the right corner areas. Quite a large blister lift on the top right, more moderate on the lower one. But these lifts have not seriously cracked and largely remain intact. Obviously care is required when handling to keep it as such as the card is so thin and flimsy. Any creasing or other lifting is fine and small, the Clarifoil laminate retains fine shine with label and rim dulling seen more under light. There are no tears or repairs, the card very sound and fully intact. Clearly, the lifting detracts, but the main graphic areas still look impressively attractive. It-is-what-it-is, a really old, fragile thin cover, probably only a handful will not have issues, and many will be far more significant than this.

Cover Back: The back is quite impressive, again with no damage of any real note – a minute scuff to the ‘o’ in ‘to; on the title near the top flipback end. It has aged with grubbiness, this mainly near the left edge, but seen more on covers half this age. This has hardly creased and with minimal hint of rubbing. Both flipbacks are solidly intact and neat, just a little patchy darkening on the ends which are unscuffed or thickened. Both front and back are very respectable indeed.

Top Edge: Bowing will rarely be avoided on a cover like this, Clarifoil tightens and pulls, causing the lifting and cover bending. So this has some curl towards the right where the lifting has occurred, but the surface is barely worn at all with full laminate retention.

Bottom Edge: This is actually very straight with hardly any wear at all up to the corner tips which predictably have rubbed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The back edge is still quite sharp with little wear, this being slightly less wide than the front in manufacture, so has some semblance of protection, this edge has no nicks or tears. The front has thickened with quite light burring, this mostly seen viewed end-on. There is a small, fine nick split to the centre, it shows little.

Spine and Text: An incredibly thin spine edge, these did not include text, it was printed on the back as seen as was the style for many of this time. Again it retains full laminate cover and hardly any wear at all. Only lightly bowed as well.

Corners: Quite light to moderate tip rubbing seen on the dark front. Good to fine shape retained without bashes, any dinking mild.

Cover Summary: All considered, I think this is a very fine and more than respectable example of this elusive vintage, and genuine classic cover. A genuine piece of rock history, modern reissues simply cannot compare to very early original examples. In terms of long playing vinyl records, this is almost ‘antique’. Of course it reminds of age, collectable ‘antiques’ do exactly that. This fragile cover will please many collectors, those who want ‘perfect’ will have to wait for the near impossible, they probably exist, but rarely are offered on the open market.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this heavyweight vintage inner is in fantastic condition which tells me the record itself has been generally well looked after and modestly played. It retains its period style semi-transparent polylining which is in fantastic fresh condition. This has aged very little at all with minimal discolouration of the paper. Both window circles are pristine, hardly any creasing and no edge splits or repairs. This is British patented, with ‘FOREIGN PATENTS PENDING’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: VERY GOOD / VERY GOOD(+): with mostly fine and light surface marks/gentle surface scuffs, barely any feelable, penetrating or sounding. This has survived the perils of the era more than well, the grading given the vintage is arguably conservative for all the reasons I have mentioned in detail above. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very heavily pressed on robust, deep-grooved, top-quality vinyl by the Decca/London company. In terms of years, this has received very modest usage, that I am more than confident to state, as the label, surfaces and importantly, the sound reiterates. With many, if not most records of this time trashed and unlistenable, this is a hugely respectable record to please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This groundbreaking early ‘rock’ album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault, with only gentle hints or traces of any sound degrading, this as played on a Linn LP12 Sondek. I have explained what I heard in my ‘Info / Sound’ paragraph higher in the listing, there is no point in repeating it again. Suffice to say, I found this a hugely enjoyable experience that has no tracking issues*, it far exceeded my realistic expectations. That not so much for its looks, but what it could have potentially been played on. Some years ago, I played what looked like a high grading, barely marked Elvis debut album, the surfaces were fantastic. But the sound had been wrecked by a blunted stylus or steel needle, one or two plays like that will write off any record. It has constant moderate surface noise and the sound degraded with loss of clarity all the way through. This simply HAS NOT occured on this record, but you only know when you play it. If ‘perfection’ is not mandatory or expected, this superb classic will please many, and maybe even most realistic collectors.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
