TEMA DEL APOLLO / OYELO QUE TE CONVIENE ... 7-inch, 45rpm single by EDDIE PALMIERI vocals by ISMAEL "PAT" QUINTANA production by TEDDY REIG. Original US pressing on the TICO label (T-455), from circa 1965. Fabulous latin soul by the ground-breaking pianist with his La Perfecta group featuring the unconventional use of trombones by legendary session men, Barry Rogers and Brazilian Jose Rodriguez. Palmieri was very important in the evolution of latin music in mid '60s New York and this homage to Harlem's 125th St Apollo Theatre was basically written as a thank you to all the fans who helped Palmieri gain exposure during his stay at the venue. Killer hypnotic vocal latin on the groovy yet potent TEMA DEL APOLLO with syncopated piano vamps / wooden flute by George Castro / montuno bassline by Bobby Rodriguez and bangin' percussion by timbalero Manny Oquendo. A proto example of the early boogaloo sound to come and for us, the 1st and best version of this desirable latin theme. The OYELO QUE TE CONVIENE side is also superb and is another fine example of the latin genre. Lots more infectious vocals by Ismael Quintana over a groove that blasts off midway into percussion breaks / funky horns and piano solos. Great for DJs. Booming production. Our original single is one of the most elusive of the Tico catalogue (up there with the Tito Puente Hit The Bongo single). Seldom comes up for sale. Very rare 45!!!

Our record grading: SEALED / M- / VG++ / VG+ / VG

Vinyl is in shiny, strong VG++ condition (closer to M-) with some hairlines from storage. A couple of mini marks from the pressing plant. Light surface noises / a few soft ticks. Small, old sticker to one side of label. Item taken from an unplayed deadstock of records and played once for the recording of the soundclip. Booming production. Record housed in generic white card sleeve. Very rare 45!!!
