Label Conditions: Both look fantastic: ultra clean, fresh and attractive with only one light and faint spindle mark on side one and just light, few and fine ones on side two, there is no wear around the hole area.

Cat Number: SHVL 757.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: The album itself is scarce and never easy to find in top conditions.

Brief Info: This vintage debut album is an acid-blues classic and introduced us to the raunchy Broughton sound. A band that always gave an audience a great time at the festivals between 1970-73 - they almost became a staple diet at these events. An early album in the prized Harvest catalogue and never too easy to find so lightly played. Always among the best for packaging, this classic Harvest cover has stunning band pictures and here in beautiful condition too, as is the record - its almost hard to believe this record dates this far back. Any collector of this cult band and the early Harvest classics, this is a must-have item.

Cover Grade and Format: EX++ a gatefold format with front and back laminate. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day.

Lamination – Front & Back: This is super sleeve that has few blemishes and little wear. The only minor issue in manufacture is slightly constructed and folded a little off square. The top edges are hence not quite flush towards the right but the right edges remain parallel. In terms of wear, this has little. The laminate is fresh, clear and ultra shiny with barely any any traces of friction rubs or dulling and all is fully adhered with no lifting or blistering. A few light mark seen on the front under light, the back has little and both sides have barely any noteworthy creasing and the classic EBB artwork looks lovely.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Odd minor scuff trace near edge but both faces look superb with barely any traces of ageing or wear.

Top Edges: Both unworn and very straight, all solidly laminated.

Bottom Edges: Odd minor scuff or tiny chip trace.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. The odd small and minor burr trace when viewed end-on. Record enters on this back edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine: solid, straight and totally unworn. As stated above, this has been slightly folded out-of-square but the right edges meet up together, the top edges drop slightly. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, the surface of which is silky smooth with no scuffs.

Corners: Even with the small drop, all corners retain superb shape, the spine pair are exceptional but all have barely any traces of wear and retain fantastic neat shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this classic late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. The folding issue is minor and only the most fussy discerning collector would worry. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner: This was in a plain white unlined EMI type inner. Too early for the promotional inners, this was one of the earliest titles issued on the famous progressive label. This inner is in superb condition with just a minor corner crease but little else to fault.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A superb EX++, with just a couple of ultra fine and faint surface marks – just a couple of light clicks were noted near the start of ‘Love in the Rain’, just about the only minuscule blemish on what is a superb sounding record, this title is never easy to find so lightly played and with nigh-on immaculate sound. A very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence. Visually a super record that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This Harvest classic plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault bar the two or three light clicks mentioned above. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Practically devoid of surface sounds and no other pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean early pressing. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
