Following on from Beautiful Freak (1996) and Electro-Shock Blues (1998), Eels' third album Daisies Of The Galaxy, released in 2000, affirmed the greatness of songwriter Mark Oliver Everett as one of the true greats in America. The standout here 'Mr. E's Beautiful Blues' featured on the teen comedy Road Trip and remains one of Eels' finest songs with melodies and a chorus - "You're goddamn right, it's a beautiful day" - that make everybody smile. One of the weirder songs but most brilliant on here is 'I Like Birds', there's a dorkiness to it that's really endearing. While some of Eels' back catalogue reflects quite dark periods in Everett's life, there's an overarching sense here that life for E a quarter of a century ago had some moments of true joy.
