Description

I am not a record dealer, just someone who has accumulated a large collection of vinyl in the 1970s and to a certain extent in the 1980s, and now has (sadly) to let my old 'friends' go to new homes (age and inevitable decay- me, not the records).
'The Civil Surface' was a bit of an afterthought for the band. They had produced two critically well received (though commercially pitiful) albums in their few years together, 'Egg' and 'The Polite Force', and were about to begin recording a third, when the band split for reasons too complex to deal with here. A couple of years later, the dust having settled, they decided to finally get round to their piece of unfinished business, with the result being released in 1974 on the budget Caroline label (part of Virgin).
I am not an expert on the grading of records, but I do know that 'Mint' and 'near-Mint' are, for all practical purposes, meaningless. Who buys a record and then never plays it? Listening to the copy I have, although it has no visible blemishes, it does have some slight  but audible surface noise on the latter half of side 2 on the quiet bits of the wind quintets, so I have decided that, although it is 'Excellent' for the most part, this flaw makes me grade it as VG+. However, a 'deep clean' wash-and-brush-up would probably do the trick. The cover is in excellent condition. Please remember that I played these records because I loved the music; I did not buy them as future Collectors items or exercises in Hi-Fi navel-gazing. I always took good care of them, however, kept them in vinyl sleeves, and in cases, but even then, some wear is an inevitability.
The matrix numbers on the run-out are C 1510 A-1U, C 1510 B-1U, original price sticker (£1.46!) stuck on inside of sleeve.
The 'Record Collector 2020' book suggests a pricing of £60 as reasonable for 'Mint'. I have selected a price I think appropriate.
