NOTE: photos of record labels don't do justice; Bright RED labels with black print always photograph badly for me, with blurred, indistinct appearing text/detail, ESPECIALLY Columbia!
Print on the labels is actually sharp, crisp solid black.

Experience that 'WOWED' the Monterey Pop Festival!
.
Butterfield Blues Band guitarist Mike Bloomfield, keyboardist Barry Goldberg, (the main writers), drummer Buddy Miles,  ace 'Super Session' bassist Harvey Brooks, Nick Gravenites and others put this electrified rhythm & blues-rock band together in 1967 and named it THE ELECTRIC FLAG. This 1968 debut is a testament to their ability to catch fire and keep on burnin'.
.
That The Electric Flag did so well - they made a huge hit at the Monterey International Pop Festival, along with the Blues Project, Paul Butterfield, and Janis Joplin, who all had a connection to The Flag beyond that pivotal festival.
.
Nick Gravenites was too much of a purist to ride his blues on the Top 40 the way Felix Cavaliere gave us "Groovin'," rather, Janis Joplin's eventual replacement in Big Brother & the Holding Company, Gravenites, and the crew pour out the soulful, chop-laden "Groovin' Is Easy" here. If it was merely a recycling of the blues, R&B and jazz, this band would have been no big deal. They infused a very 1960'a sense of fresh thinking and tastefully rendered musical freedom along with it. Augmenting the band on this LP are Paul Beaver on MOOG, Richie Havens on SITAR and Sivuca on FLAMENCO GUITAR(!)  It's a classy production with a stunning fusion of Rock, Blues, Jazz and R&B, bold new ideas and inspired playing from this assembled group of musicians from the top echelon of American Blues Rock.
.
Though launched after Al Kooper's The Blues Project, A Long Time Comin' itself influenced them and many bands who began following their lead, fusing more soul and jazz into their sounds. In their classic take on the blues chestnut "Wine", they proclaimed "you know Janis Joplin, she'll tell you all about that wine, baby." The album is great and the material is pretty much composed by Mike Bloomfield and Barry Goldberg, when they're not covering Howlin' Wolf's "Killing Floor" and adding spoken-word news broadcasts to the mix. Amazing stuff all in all, the original vinyl is wonderful listening and a revelation.
