"These songs really represent...songs made for the soundtrack - some used and some not used. It seemed a shame to discard these sensitive renditions by Ella, so it was decided to issue them all together in this album. In keep with the stark simplicity of the film Miss Fitzgerald's accompaniment was limited simply to a pianist, Paul Smith; and this album proves once again that Ella Fitzgerald is without peer when it comes to singing ballads, whether accompanied by the largest orchestra, or, in this case, the smallest".
