Description

ELMORE JAMES - The best of - UK SUE label LP A1/B1 1965

Time to sell more of my vinyl collection - some classical, some jazz, some pop, rock, folk & psych. I know it won't be appreciated by my daughter or the next generation, so I'm shifting it myself and hope I find good homes for it. Initially I am just picking at random from duplicates, stuff I have on CD and items unplayed for ages so there should be a decent mix. You never know, there might just be something to suit your taste.

This listing is for a UK first pressing of The best of Elmore James, classic bottleneck blues

Elmore James -
The best of Elmore James
UK Sue red & orange label
1965
Cat Number: ILP 918 with dead wax ILP 918 A / ILP 918 B
Mode: Mono

The Album:
Mr Dust my Blues, the one and only Elmore James, leading exponent of bottleneck blues, with a classic selection from 1965 on the highly collectible Sue label (subsidiary of Island). This is the first UK pressing. I was given this in the late 60's by a friend who had managed to scratch it - please note comments below about the scrape on side 1, which (fortunately) looks and feels worse than it plays. It's a sought-after album, so please realise that it's not a perfect copy before you consider bidding.

Condition:
Cover:  Single front-laminated flipback sleeve is in very nice condition considering it's almost 50 years old. It has some light ring wear and laminate creasing but it's very strong and intact. The spine text is fully legible. The unlaminated rear is showing some age-related discolouration, but there are no tears stickers or writing.
Labels: SUE matt red and yellow labels bright and clean. One side (see picture) rubbed and puckered slightly around spindle hole. Just a few obvious spindle marks. No writing or stickers.
Vinyl: Nice looking vinyl but scraped on side 1. Generally some of the customary light paper marks, but spoiled by the scraped areas on the first side - see picture just to the right of "Last" on the cover. That mark is one which can be clearly felt as well as seen. Remarkably, it does play through with no skipping or sticking, but there are some pops during about 20 seconds of Shake your Moneymaker - not disastrous, but noticeable. It otherwise plays generally fine with just a touch of crackling in quiet patches, no major interference.

Overall:
A nice sleeve housing a decent copy of this album which plays well apart from the scratch - I'd guess that this might be professionally graded at (cover / vinyl) VG+ / VG- to VG+

Terms:
Please note that I try to test-play at least part of each record before listing, but do not have time to play fully in all cases. I played a lot of this one, but if you do discover a problem which I might have missed, please do not hesitate to contact me and I will do all I can to rectify the situation.

Postage:
Royal Mail are 'restructuring' prices from April 2013. Not necessarily all bad news, it depends what you buy - a single LP posted to UK or Europe is now more expensive, but within UK revised weight ranges might allow up to 4 LPs to be posted for the same cost as one. Rest of world prices seem to have reduced slightly. Approximate prices for normal postage - UK £3.35 for up to 1kg (could be up to 4 LPs), Europe £5.30 + £1.80 each additional, Rest of world £7.55 + £2.70 each additional item - these amounts include estimated actual Royal Mail cost for first class or air mail, plus 35p for cost of packaging material (a brand new custom mailer with stiffener).
Losses: Royal Mail are also reducing maximum compensation to £20 unless items are signed-for. Overseas purchasers - if your purchase is well over £20, a signed for service must be selected when paying as I will not assume the extra risk and normal airmail will only be covered for £20. Compensation on signed-for shipments is up to £50.

I'm happy to hold records for a short while if you wish to bid on more and combine shipment.

These records are all from my personal collection built up over almost 50 years. Some were bought new, others pre-owned so condition will vary. My attempt at grading is based on Record Collector's grading system. Please therefore read and understand the detailed description which is my honest personal assessment - and I guess you can always check how good or bad that is by checking my feedback. Questions welcome if anything is unclear. Happy bidding.
