Description
'ELO' (Electric Light Orchestra) were an English rock band formed in Birmingham in 1970 by songwriters and multi-instrumentalist's Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood, with drummer Bev Bevan. After Wood's departure in 1972, Lynne became band leader, arranging and producing every album, while writing virtually all of their original material. For their initial tenure, Lynne, Bevan and keyboardist Richard Tandy were the bands only consistent members.
Released by 'Jet Records' in July, 1981 in the UK and by 'Columbia Records' in August, 1981 in the US, 'Time' was the ninth studio album released by the band. A concept album, it was written about a man from the 1980's, who is taken to the year 2095, where he is confronted by a dichotomy between technical advances and a longing for past romance. The album spawned five singles; 'Hold On Tight' (August, 1981), 'Twilight' (October, 1981), 'Ticket to the Moon/Here Is the Moon' (December, 1981), 'Rain Is Falling' (January, 1982) and 'The Way Life's Meant To Be' (March, 1982).
The record attracted a cult following of retrofuturist enthusiasts. It is considered to be the first major concept album devoted to time travel, as well as ELO's most influential album.
'Time' attained Platinum certification in the UK and gold status in the US and Germany.
