Rare original 1977 UK Ogun Records first press vinyl LP with laminated sleeve. This fabulous and legendary LP sold in very small numbers when originally released and is now highly sought after by British jazz collectors!!
In London in the mid 1970s, punters leaning on the bar at jazz gigs could be heard speculating that if there was any justice, Elton Dean's Ninesense would be as much of a draw in New York as in London. This superb LP from the late Soft Machine saxophonist's best band is more than a nostalgia trip – it's a remarkable pan across the British contemporary jazz scene of that era. The nine-piece band features the mercurial free-piano of Keith Tippett, the seismic South African rhythm team of bassist Harry Miller and drummer Louis Moholo, the powerful postbop horn-players Alan Skidmore and Harry Beckett, and the eclectic Dean himself. Their optimistic free-improv bordered on mayhem at times, but Dean's charts – sounding like anything from Thus Spake Zarathustra to a Salvation Army brass band with Carla Bley's Escalator Over the Hill or Mike Gibbs in the middle – are blearily majestic. The hotly ascending melody of Seven for Lee is a standout, as is the tumult of piano, bass and drums under Three for All, and Tippett's astonishing piano shadowing of Skidmore on Sweet FA .
Dean exploits the full power of his playing, composing and arranging skills in these memorable compositions. His individual style of moving from tonal to atonal in a mere verse is realized on a larger scale. The mood is joyful, as free and traditional currents swish back and forth smoothly to form one larger sound. There appears to be a warm familiarity and trust amongst the members that can be felt inside the music.
Despite the frenetic bursts of energy that each player fires off in solos, the tunes melodically resolve in a more cohesive fashion than typically heard in music from Tippett and Dean's other groups. All of the players are (or were - some have passed away) virtuosos and the combination of structure and free blowing is awesome! All the soloing is fantastic, but the revelation is Keith Tippet's piano. Check out his solo on Seven For Lee in particular. This amazing band only lasted for three short years!
Elton Dean's "Happy Daze" is one of those super cool UK jazz LPs from the 1970s that has become increasingly sought after these days.
A great original 1st pressing lp for your jazz-fusion / prog rock vinyl collection. If you have a liking for jazz of this era or are interested in Soft Machine, Brotherhood Of Breath, Charlie Mingus then this rare original vinyl lp is a must....don't hesitate!
