UNITED SOUND STUDIOS -- UNRELEASED ACETATE.

A ONE OF A KIND ITEM. This is a 12" acetate of a never before released recording of PEPPER ADAMS (baritone sax), BARRY HARRIS (piano), ELVIN JONES (drums) and JIMMY RICHARDSON (bass). Recorded at Detroit's United Sound studios most likely in the mid to late 1950s.

The label is not dated but it is without question that this reference disc dates to that time period ("Bitty Ditty" and "Elusive" are Thad Jones compositions from about 1954). Although listed on the label as the ELVIN JONES QT, these recordings really feature baritone giant Pepper Adams at his amazing best. I originally acquired this from a record label promotions man who knew many local jazz musicians. I have owned this for quite some time and I am now convinced these tracks were never released. After much researching I've found that these songs do not appear in any discographies with these personnel (correct me if I am wrong). Also the piano is a little out of tune and most producers would have dismissed the recording because of that. Now it just adds a nice live feeling to the recording.

Once sold I will not give anyone else sound files or audio copies of this acetate. It will belong to the winner exclusively

CONDITION: is VG+ with no scratches and no cracks or other problems. Judging from the appearance and sound of the disc it has not been played or handled much. The custom label has browned slightly and bubbled a little with age.

I've posted incomplete sound files recorded WITHOUT cleaning the acetate. It does not need to be cleaned but a careful cleaning would probably remove the few stray clicks you may hear in the posted sound samples

The tracks are SHILOH (3:37), BITTY DITTY (3:40), ELUSIVE (5:40) and TENDERLY (4:14).

A WORD ABOUT ACETATES: Acetates are plastic coated metal discs that sound like conventional records. They are custom cut, one at a time, using a special cutting machine. This could have been a reference copy for the producer or an audition/demo disc
