Description
This is an extremely rare Elvis demo single of “Big Boss Man” / “You Don’t Know Me”, (in all my years of collecting, I have only seen two other copies) and was pressed in the Autumn 1967 by Decca Records on behalf of RCA Victor Records. Both sides were recorded in Feb 1967.
Interestingly, the label shows “You Don’t Know Me” as the “A” side, but it was flipped to “Big Boss Man” by DJ’s as they thought this was the better side. In the USA, "Big Boss Man" was the “A” side so it could be a mistake by Decca. However, it made no difference as it was one of the very few Elvis singles that did not chart at all and was basically discarded – so very hard to find.
The label shows the studio matrix numbers UPKM 2771 & UPKM 2766 as opposed to the catalogued numbers UPA4. The RCA 16421 UK catalogue number and the US catalogue number 47-8941 are shown together with the release date of 3rd Nov 1967.
As few as 100 copies were pressed and sent out to Radio Luxembourg / BBC Radio disc jockeys and record reviewers for NME and Record Mirror. Unusually, Decca have also included the playing time on both sides. The vinyl/sound is in really excellent condition for a disc which is 40 years old. A great collector’s item and a “must have” especially if you collect Elvis demos.
