ELVIS PRESLEY "FRANKIE & JOHNNY" Original U.S 1966 stereo soundtrack LP featuring the "King of Rock & Roll" in a Dixieland setting (RCA Victor) LSP-3553. VG-/VG. Including "Frankie & Johnny", "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" +10 more. Complete w/color 11" x 11" bonus photo & custom inner sleeve depicting Elvis' record & tape catalog.

From the time Elvis was released from the Army in 1960 through 1969, he made 27 films. His standing as "The King of Rock & Roll" suffered as the Beatles & the British Invasion swept the music charts. Add this to the fact that he didn't make return to live appearances until the 1968 "Comeback" TV special points to a serious career crisis brewing on the horizon. But in 1966 his 20th film, "Frankie & Johnny" was the first of 3 Elvis movies to appear that year. It takes place on a Mississippi River steamboat & the plot is sort of an alternate-universe version of "Showboat". It was loosely based on the 1904 title song but leaves plenty of room for musical mayhem. It was directed by Fred De Cordova- the longtime producer of Johnny Carson's "Tonight" TV show & features the "Beverly Hillbillies" Donna Douglas as Frankie with Harry Morgan, Sue Ann Langdon & Nancy Kovack rounding out the supporting cast.  The song "Frankie & Johnny" was released as a single & reached #25 on the U.S. Top 100 in March, 1966. One of the best songs on the LP, the ballad "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" by Joy Byers was chosen as the "B" side & went to #45 on it's own. Joy had previously written "It Hurts Me' (w/Charlie Daniels), "C,mon Everybody" (from "Viva La Vegas" & also penned "Let Yourself Go" from "Speedway" for Elvis. Another good ballad on "Frankie & Johnny" is "What Every Woman Lives For" by Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman. In addition to writing hits for the Drifters, Fabian, Bobby Darin & Dion & the Belmonts, they had a long association with Elvis composing such classics as "Viva Las Vegas", "Little Sister", "His Latest Flame", "Suspicion", "Surrender" & many others. The rest of the soundtrack consisted of Elvis Presley Music copyrights interspersed with aa few public domain titles to add authenticity to the 19th century time frame of the film. The soundtrack to "Frankie & Johnny" is a long way from Rock & Roll but still makes for pleasant listening & it was posthumously certified gold & platinum in 2004.

Cover is intact w/no writing or tears & the front & back look good. There is extensive edge wear resulting in a split seam on much of the left spine (neatly repaired but still noticeable). Stereo record w/black "dog on top" RCA Victor labels plays through w/no problem but w/minor surface noise in the quieter passages between tracks. Complete w/the 11" x 11" color bonus photo available only in the first pressings of this LP. It is a print of a color painting by June Kelly depicting Elvis in his "Frankie & Johnny" costume. The hard to find bonus photo has a slight stain in the upper right corner but is otherwise intact & in great shape.
