This auction is for an original vinyl LP of RCA Victor Records SP 33-461 Elvis Presley Special Palm Sunday Programming. This half-hour radio special includes Elvis Presley recordings of How Great Thou Art, Stand by Me, Crying in the Chapel and others.
Produced to air on Palm Sunday, March 19, 1967, in promotion of Elvis Presley's RCA sacred album “How Great Thou Art”, this is the original vinyl LP sent to a select few radio stations around the U.S.
This Elvis item is so rare and coveted that it has been bootlegged over the years, but the item in this auction is totally authentic. The correct matrix numbers are machine stamped into the vinyl on both sides, proving it's an original. More proof is the style of the label, which as you see in my photos has a small groove around it below the RCA Victor logo. This matches the original label pictured on this web site. http://www.elvisrecords.us/sp-33-461-special-palm-sunday-programming/ Bootleg versions, which are sometimes seen still in shrink wrap, have more of a ridge inside the label, instead of the obvious indentation as seen on my copy and the original on the web site.
While working at KFSA radio in Fort Smith, Arkansas, in the early 70's, I saved this sweet Elvis rarity from a box of records headed for the trash. An ad promoting the program appeared in Billboard magazine during March, 1967, and an article read, “The Palm Sunday program is contained on a 12-inch special album, which includes a spot announcement for the national Red Cross. The program, which is being sponsored by Presley and Colonel Parker, his manager, also has an open time period for local charity plugs.”
I have never played the record. I assume it was played once on the air in 1967 and then put into the box where I found it. Other than a few light scuffs, both sides shine like new and are in excellent condition. It is in a plain paper sleeve. See the photos. What you see is what you get.
