Background -
Constantin Silvestri was a major conductor on the British scene, known in particular as a talented orchestra builder.As a boy in Romania, his musical talents developed quickly. He made his first public appearance as a pianist at the age of ten. He studied piano and composition at Bucharest Conservatory.
He began his career as a pianist, but had the opportunity to conduct the Bucharest Radio Symphony Orchestra in 1930. This debut was a success, and convinced Silvestri to pursue conducting as a career. In 1935 he joined the conducting staff of the Bucharest Opera, rising eventually to becoming its music director. In 1945 he also became music director of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra.
He joined the faculty of the Bucharest Conservatory in 1948, teaching conducting. He received a State Prize for conducting in 1952. He became a frequent conductor, mainly in "friendly Socialist countries" such as the Soviet Union and others in Eastern Europe.
Silvestri left Romania in 1956 and settled in Paris. In 1957 he made his debut in Britain on January 25, 1957, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra at Royal Albert Hall. He made a strong impression, leading to his being appointed to lead the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in 1961. He moved to Bournemouth and became a naturalized citizen of the United Kingdom in 1967. He made his debut at Covent Garden in Mussorgsky's Khovanschina.
Silvestri gained a strong reputation in Britain with his strong, precise performances and his strong sympathies to British music. His conducting style stressed the individual expression of the sections and soloists of the orchestra. He was also admired for raising standards of the Bournemouth Orchestra even while the organization was facing recurrent financial problems, and is credited with establishing the status it still enjoys as a major respected British orchestra. - Joseph Stevenson

CONDITION Details:
The LP jacket is in near mint minus condition. The jacket is tight and clean, with NO seam splits, NO discoloration or hand writing and NO cut out marks. The corners are solid. The colors on the jacket are sharp and clean. The jacket has the flipped over straight edge seams at the top, bottom and spine. The front is covered in clear plastic or "clairifoil", the back does not have any clear plastic. The corners and seams show slight shelf wear due to aging - see pictures with this listing for more detail as they are of the actual item.
The LP is in near mint minus overall condition! This is the earliest "Not For Sale / Factory Sample" item. There are no serious marks on the vinyl. This is the nicest copy we have ever had (best condition). There are no serious marks on the LP. The LP may have just the slightest spider mark, which is caused by sliding the LP in and out of the original inner sleeve. Most of the time, these types of marks are not audible, but it really depends on the sensitivity of your audio gear. Considering the vintage of this LP, the vinyl looks superb! However, this is not a new audiophile LP....some extraneous sound is inevitable and should be expected for a vintage LP. A record from the 1960s is rarely perfect. However this LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen! There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels either - a true archival copy.A Short Note About LP GRADING -
- Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always thoroughly clean your LPs before playing them.
LPs can be audiophile quality pressings (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
