Background -
At an overbooked all-star saxophone concert held in 1965 Berlin, the musicians were supposed to only play for 15 minutes. Tenor saxophonist Booker Ervin protested against the restrictive situation by performing the intense and stirring "Blues for You" for 27½-minutes, tearing down the house. A decade later (after Ervin's 1970 death) the performance (with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Neils Pedersen and drummer Alan Dawson) was released for the first time and its passion was worth waiting for. Also on this historic album is pianist Horace Parlan's somber solo tribute to Ervin ("Lament for Booker") which was recorded in 1975. - Scott YanowA very distinctive tenor with a hard, passionate tone and an emotional style that was still tied to chordal improvisation, Booker Ervin was a true original. He was originally a trombonist, but taught himself tenor while in the Air Force (1950-1953). After studying music in Boston for two years, he made his recording debut with Ernie Fields' R&B band (1956). Ervin gained fame while playing with Charles Mingus (off and on during 1956-1962), holding his own with the volatile bassist and Eric Dolphy. He also led his own quartet, worked with Randy Weston on a few occasions in the '60s, and spent much of 1964-1966 in Europe before dying much too young from kidney disease. Ervin, who is on several notable Charles Mingus records, made dates of his own for Bethlehem, Savoy, and Candid during 1960-1961, along with later sets for Pacific Jazz and Blue Note. His nine Prestige sessions of 1963-1966 (including The Freedom Book, The Song Book, The Blues Book, and The Space Book) are among the high points of his career. - Scott Yanow

This record has special significance to me. As I know the many emotional things that transpired before this 1965 Berlin Festival. A major heartbreak was the death of George Tucker in New York City. He was to have recorded with Booker in Germany. There were many other emotional problems with this concert. Booker's solo clearly shows the artistry of jazz. All great musicians can interpret music but only jazz artists can improvise and put forth their true emotions musically. Thanks to Kenny Drew, Nils-Henning Pedersen, Alan Dawson and Horace Parlan a great wish of mine. The release of this recording, has been fulfilled. - Jane Ervin

CONDITION Details:
The LP JACKET is in near mint minus overall condition! The jacket has NO seam splits, NO cutout marks and NO writing on it, but it does have some color that bled through from an old price sticker onto the jacket (see top, front, right corner for detail). The corners and seams are solid with just some light shelf wear. The colors on the jacket are sharp and clean - see our pictures with this listing as they are of the actual item offered.
The LP is in near mint minus overall condition. We found that the vinyl looked superb - there are no serious marks evident. The LP does have a few spider marks. Spider marks may sound on some audio systems, depending on the sensitivity of your audio gear. When play tested, it performed very well for a vintage record, with no skips, with some light noise periodically, mostly during quieter passages of the music. The LP retains much of the original gloss and sheen. It does have a bit of dust and perhaps a finger print or two on the vinyl so it should be cleaned before playing for best results. There are NO serious spindle marks on the record labels - this is a fine collector's grade copy of this LP.A Short Note About LP GRADING -
- Mint = Only used for sealed items.
- Near Mint = Virtually flawless in every way.
- Near Mint Minus = Item has some minor imperfections, some audible.
- Excellent = Item obviously played and enjoyed with some noise.
- Very Good Plus = Many more imperfections which are noticeable and obtrusive.
For best results, always properly clean your LPs before playing them.
The LP is an audiophile quality pressing (any collector of fine MFSL, half speeds, direct to discs, Japanese/UK pressings etc., can attest to the difference a quality pressing can make to an audio system).
