I am selling an original first copy of ERIC DOLPHY – LAST DATE – Fontana 681 008 ZL. This record is my collection from new since the 1960s. Last Date has been Eric Dolphy’s final statement, live recorded for an audience in Hilversum (Holland) on June 2, 1964. At that occasion he was accompanied by Misja Mengelberg (p), Jacques Schols (b) and Han Bennink (d). Besides being a rarity, this record is also stunning music with several masterpieces of construction and expression, one of which prompts an audible sigh of delight from someone in the audience. The record finishes with Dolphy’s own voice, taped earlier in the month of April 1964: “When you hear music, after it is over it’s gone in the air. You can never capture it again”.

The record is in excellent condition. The vinyl is still shiny, clean, no surface noise, with like new sound quality; only a few occasional soft clicks (crackles) can be heard at the intro of ‘You don’t know what love is’, but that is all. No further major or minor defects are visible or audible. The labels on both sides are very clean; no writings, stickers or whatsoever. But I will grade the record ‘EXCELLENT’ or ‘VERY GOOD PLUS’ condition to be on the safe side.

As every collector knows, sleeves of 1960s albums usually show how much an owner has cared for his LPs. This one is no exception. Sure is, that I am auctioning here a rare album which many collectors will never see, and definitely not in this excellent condition. Most copies are already in the hands of collectors and the latest copies that I have seen were auctioned more than a year ago. So very likely you will not have the chance to see this rare and legendary album very often, if at all.

As a follow-up to questions I received on the condition of the record, I have listened to it again and inspected it carefully. As this is a collector’s item, I will be as accurate as possible: no surface noise is evident upon playing, except in the already mentioned lower part of Dolphy’s solo flute intro of ‘You don’t know what love is’, where you can hear crackles and a few soft clicks. The record’s sound quality is 100 percent perfect  The vinyl is quit! (Btw great recording too.)

Visual inspection of the record surface under bright light shows a few signs of wear and also very light scuffs which you won’t hear. As noted, both labels are clean, however, under the same bright light I noticed a few spindle marks -just a few- that I hadn’t observed before. The LP cover is as described: no folds, seam splits or any other noticeable similar defect. There is even no corner wear, which I believe says all!
