Description
Two radio programs on these two 16 inch, glass base, 33 1/3 rpm discs. These discs were recorded for reference purposes only and not available to the general public, very rare!
These discs contain two historic radio broadcasts featuring performances by the “Esquire All American Jazz Band”, which was a band assembled of the finest musicians as chosen by Esquire Magazine. The announced personnel are listed for both shows
Both programs were broadcast over The Blue Network
“Chamber Music Society of Lower Basin Street” from January 16, 1944 hosted by Milton Cross with “The Esquire All American Jazz Band” featuring Jack Teagarden (trombone), Louis Armstrong (trumpet), Art Tatum (piano), Sidney Catlett (drums), Oscar Pettiford (bass), Coleman Hawkins (saxophone), Al Casey (guitar).
The Esquire All American Jazz Band perform “Basin Street Blues” vocal Jack Teagarden, Louis Armstrong, “Esquire Blues”, “Honeysuckle Rose” in combination with Paul LaValle & The Woodbury Orchestra. Program features regulars Paul LaValle & The Woodbury Orchestra & Dick Todd. Songs by Paul LaValle & The Woodbury Orchestra include “Get Happy”, “My Silent Love” vocal Dick Todd, “The Surrey With The Fringe On Top”. Program was sponsored by Woodbury's Facial Soap. 30 minutes. “Victory Parade of Spotlight Bands” radio program from January 18, 1944 featuring “Esquire’s All American Jazz Band” performing from The Metropolitan Opera House in New York City. It is stated that this was the first jazz concert ever given at the Met. The admission fee for the audience was the purchase of a War Bond. The Esquire All American Jazz Band for this show is announced as Louis Armstrong (trumpet), Roy Eldrige (trumpet), Jack Teagarden (trombone), Coleman Hawkins (saxophone), Barney Bigard (clarinet), Sidney Catlett (drums), Art Tatum (piano), Al Casey (guitar), Oscar Pettiford (bass), Lionel Hampton (vibraharp), Red Norvo (vibraharp).
The Esquire All American Jazz Band perform “Esquire Bounce” (featuring Al Casey, Art Tatum, Coleman Hawkins), “Rockin’ Chair” vocal Mildred Bailey with Teddy Wilson on piano, Red Novro on vibraphone, “Basin Street Blues” vocal Jack Teagarden & Louis Armstrong, “I’ll Get By” vocal Billie Holiday featuring Roy Eldridge**, “Tea For Two” featuring Barney Bigard, Roy Eldridge, Art Tatum, Lionel Hampton. During the show the broadcast switches to Hollywood where director Archie Mayo presents Benny Goodman with the Esquire Award for outstanding clarinetist. Benny Goodman performs “Rachel’s Dream” with Teddy Wilson at piano. ** on the song “I’ll Get By”, the introduction is given at the end of side one, and side 2 begins with a moment of applause and then the song, which lasts 1 minute 15 seconds. With the applause at the start, the song sounds complete, however it’s possible that it may be incomplete due to the disc switch. This is an excellent World War Two era jazz concert! 25 minutes.
